The More You Know

I remember the old "The More You Know" public service announcements on Saturday mornings.  Some television star would come on and say something like
"Hi, I'm Michael J Fox and remember, don't drink poison." then the more you know star would shoot across the screen and a lesson had been learned.

I've been thinking a lot about grace and mercy for the last week or so.

Both are important but as Christians I think we get the two confused to our detriment.

Mercy is when someone does wrong, you are in a place to punish them but you don’t.  You have extended mercy.
If someone wrongs you and you forgive them but you don’t forget you have extended mercy.

When you come to mercy you admit your wrongdoing, you apologize and mercy says its ok but keeps track of your “score”.

Grace is when someone does wrong and you hold no hard feelings, you keep no ledger of the mistakes.

1 Corinthians 13:5 says “love keeps no record of wrongs”.  Grace is pure no strings attached love.

Grace wipes the slate clean.  In grace there is no condemnation.  In grace all parties are free.

What a beautiful thought.

As christians we have a tendency to go to the altar or to approach God and ask for forgiveness.

Sometimes we still feel regret and remorse for something God has covered by His grace.

Stop that cycle, if God has forgiven you it is done.  Jeremiah 31:34 says “I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.”
The Psalmist says it like this “As far as the east is from the west, so far he has removed us from our transgressions.” Psalm 103:12

That is grace, and if you have received it you are free. Completely and beautifully free.

Don’t return to your regret, don’t dwell on things that have passed. You are free and who the Lord has set free is free indeed.

Be free don’t let others throw your past in your face.

If they can’t move on that is on them.

Grace wins.
